Reflection on Lecture Notes for Week 1: Futura Fonts
Overall, I found the lecture notes for week 1 on Futura fonts to be very informative and inspiring. I learned a lot about the history and design principles of Futura, as well as how it has been used in graphic design and UX design.
I was particularly interested in the work of Vaughan Oliver and Russel Mills, who are both known for their creative and innovative use of typography in album cover art. I also found the Bauhaus movement to be very influential in the development of Futura and other modern fonts.
I am excited to learn more about Futura and how I can use it in my own work. I am also interested in exploring the other topics that were covered in the lecture notes, such as visual grammar, point, line, and plane, and the golden ratio.
Here are some specific thoughts and reflections on the different topics covered in the lecture notes:
- Graphics design new basics book for inspiration: I am definitely interested in checking out this book for inspiration. I think it would be helpful to learn more about the basics of graphic design, especially since I am new to this field.
- Visual grammar: I found the concept of visual grammar to be very interesting. I think it is important to understand the basic principles of visual design in order to create effective compositions.
- Vaughan Oliver - album cover art artist for music: I was very impressed with the work of Vaughan Oliver. His album cover art is both creative and visually appealing. I think he does a great job of using typography to convey the mood and atmosphere of the music.
- Russel Mills - album cover art artist: I also liked the work of Russel Mills. His album cover art is often whimsical and playful. I think he does a good job of using typography to create a sense of mystery and intrigue.
- Point, line, and plane: I found the discussion of point, line, and plane to be very helpful. These are the basic elements of visual design, and it is important to understand how they can be used to create different effects.
- Bauhaus: I am very interested in the Bauhaus movement. I think the Bauhaus designers were very innovative, and their work has had a lasting impact on graphic design and architecture.
- Sagmeister: I am a big fan of Sagmeister's work. I think he is one of the most creative and thought-provoking graphic designers working today.
- Figma basics: I am glad that the professor covered the basics of Figma in the lecture. Figma is a popular design tool, and I am excited to learn more about how to use it.
- Josef muller: I was not familiar with the work of Josef Muller before, but I am very impressed with it. I like the way he uses typography to create a sense of rhythm and movement in his work.
- Wim Crowel: I also like the work of Wim Crowel. His typography is often bold and expressive. I think he does a good job of using typography to create a sense of impact.
- Golden ratio: I found the discussion of the golden ratio to be very interesting. The golden ratio is a mathematical proportion that is often found in nature and art. I think it is interesting to consider how the golden ratio can be used to create visually appealing compositions.
- Mathematical reasoning on why the lines are spaced away from each other like that: I found the mathematical reasoning on why the lines are spaced away from each other like that to be very informative. It helped me to understand the design principles of Futura in more depth.
- Apps to download: I am definitely going to download the apps that were recommended in the lecture, such as Notion, Pinterest, Blackboard, and Figma. I think these apps will be helpful for my studies and for my future career as a designer.
