Paul’s monday class 3 oct 2022 notes
Reflection and summary of lecture notes for week 2 of Paul's Monday class, October 3, 2023:
Key takeaways:
- Cloud storage is recommended for students, and UU provides students with access to 1TB of OneDrive storage.
- The Vitruvian Man by Leonardo da Vinci uses the golden ratio, a mathematical proportion that is often found in nature and art.
- Three images that reflect the golden ratio are the shell of a snail, Greek architecture (such as the Pantheon), and the Apple logo design.
- The Fibonacci sequence is a series of numbers where each number is the sum of the two previous numbers. The golden ratio is a visual representation of a number in the Fibonacci sequence.
- Dieter Rams is a German industrial designer who is known for his minimalist and functional designs.
- Gestalt principles are a set of rules that describe how people perceive visual information.
- Paddy Donnelly is a children's illustrator who uses bold colors and simple shapes in his work.
Assignment:
- Find examples of Gestalt principles in the wild (such as at Tesco's) and write a blog post about your findings.
- Your sketchbooks may be handed in to the university in January for review.
Reflection:
I am glad that Paul recommends using cloud storage, as it is a convenient and secure way to store my notes and other files. I am also grateful that UU provides students with access to 1TB of OneDrive storage.
I am interested in learning more about the golden ratio and how it can be used to create visually appealing compositions. I am also interested in learning more about Gestalt principles and how they can be used to design effective user interfaces.
I am excited to work on the assignment for this week. I think it will be fun to find examples of Gestalt principles in the wild and to write a blog post about my findings. I am also looking forward to handing in my sketchbooks to the university in January. I think it will be helpful to get feedback on my work from my professors.
Additional notes:
- The quote "The person who asks a question is a fool for a minute, the person who does not ask is a fool for a life" by Confucius is a reminder that it is important to ask questions in order to learn and grow.
