Paul’s monday class 10th october 2022 notes
Key takeaways:
- Organisations need to follow the Children's Code in their interactions with their websites and content. The Children's Code is a set of rules that are designed to protect children online.
- Made in Figma using just X's, grids, and Fibonacci: This shows how it is possible to create different and interesting effects using a limited set of tools.
- Typography: Typography is the art and technique of arranging type. Weingart, Kunz, and Tschichhold are all influential typographers. Early types of typography had serifs, but as printing processes became finer, sans serif typefaces became more popular. Kerning is the space between letters, and it is important to kerning letters correctly to create a visually appealing composition. The paragraph is a unit of text that is separated from other units of text by blank lines. Alignment can be used to separate different pieces of content and to show hierarchy. The WhatFont Chrome extension can be used to see what font a website uses.
- Grid systems: Grid systems provide a structural sense to designs and can be used to break down visual information. The BBC Gel grid is a global experience language that is used to create consistent and user-friendly websites.
- Project 2: The assignment for project 2 is to create a visual representation of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights using points, lines, and planes. The colors should be kept to a minimum (2 or 3 maximum), and the work should be inspired by the music of Max Richter, Voice of All Human Beings. Students can use the Material Design grid or the Fibonacci sequence to help them with their design.
Reflection:
I am glad that Paul covered the Children's Code in his lecture. It is important for designers to be aware of the rules and regulations that apply to their work, especially when they are working on projects that involve children.
I am also interested in learning more about typography and grid systems. I think that these are two essential skills for any graphic designer to have. I am looking forward to working on project 2 and to creating a visual representation of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
Additional notes:
- The Material Design grid is a set of guidelines that can be used to create user interfaces that are consistent and easy to use.
- The Fibonacci sequence is a series of numbers where each number is the sum of the two previous numbers. The Fibonacci sequence can be used to create visually appealing compositions by using the proportions of the numbers in the sequence.
