Modernism:

Evolved as a response to the carnage of the 1st World War, Modernism was the development of a range of movements in art, architecture, design and literature that flourished in the period between the World Wars. Its proponents believed that the world and humanity could be improved by new approaches to art and design focused on the most basic aspects of daily life; housing, furniture and communications. Solutions were believed to lie in science and technology, with mechanism eliminating wasted time and effort, and form following function.

Jan Tschichold was a prominent German calligrapher, typographer and book designer. He is responsible for the iconic visual identity of Penguin books developed after World War II. Influenced by the work of the Bauhaus school, Tschichold played a significant role in the development of graphic design in the 20th century, developing and promoting principles of typographic modernist design, based on conservative structures and use of corporate identity.

Herbert Matter was a Swiss born designer, photographer and film maker. A prolific graphic artist, he was a member of the early generation of modern designers, who due to advances in printing techniques was able to experiment with photography and its use in collage and photomontage, often using extreme juxtapositions of scale to create dramatic and effective compositions. He initially attended university in Switzerland, but excited by the possibilities of modernism moved to Paris to continue his studies.

Saul Bass was an American graphic designer and Oscar-winning filmmaker, best known for his design of motion-picture title sequences, film posters, and corporate logos. During his 40-year career, Bass worked for some of Hollywood's most prominent filmmakers, including Alfred Hitchcock, Otto Preminger, Billy Wilder, Stanley Kubrick, and Martin Scorsese. Among his best known title sequences are the animated paper cut-out of a heroin addict's arm for Preminger's The Man with the Golden Arm, the credits racing up and down what eventually becomes a high-angle shot of a skyscraper in Hitchcock's North by Northwest, and the disjointed text that races together and apart in Psycho.
